Mission Impossible III
Director: J.J. Abrams Year: 2006 Language: English Country: America
I have to admit, having seen the drivel produced by Brian De Palma and John Woo produced for the first two entries in the Mission Impossible series I wasn't too bothered about seeing number 3. After all, if the directors of films such as Scarface and Hard Boiled can't do anything with the premise, what hope has relevant new-comer J.J. Abrams? Having bought the 3 films as a set though, I thought I might as well finish the trilogy and I'm reasonably glad I did.

Mission Impossible 3 sees Ethan Hunt all settled down with his fiancee Julia (Michelle Monaghan). But when a sadistic arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) captures one of his agents, he discovers a plot which could see Davian gain possession of a weapon of doomsday like proportions. Hunt comes out of retirement to stop Davian in his tracks.

MI:III is slightly toned down compared to the first two, the plot premise is still pretty straight forward spy thriller stuff and there is still use of the dodgy rubber device to allow characters to become other characters, but this is kept to a minimum and the film is pretty much believable for most of its run-time. Even Cruise is less annoying that usual.

All in all, the best of the 3 and worth watching. Requires little backstory from the first two, so it might be best to jump in here rather than sit through the previous films first.
