Kick-Ass
Director: Matthew Vaughn Year: 2010 Language: English Country: America
Dave Lizewski is a typical teenager, a comic book nerd who isn't one of the cool kids. He hangs about with his 2 best friends, wondering why no-one is real life has ever tried to be a superhero. One day, he orders a green wetsuit from the internet, fashions a costume and goes out to try and be a hero under the monicker Kick-Ass. His heroism is short lived though as he is stabbed by the first pair of criminals he challenges and then subsequently gets hit by a car. His resulting injuries leave him with a body full of metal and some nerve damage, both of which come in handy when he resumes his super-hero bit.

He soon gets a name for himself and continues his crime fighting antics, but he soon becomes involved in a feud between another pair of self-styled superheroes, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl, and a local crime boss.

Kick-Ass builds on this premise of normal people playing superheroes in a world which isn't so different from the real world. The film is full of references to comic books and the script is darkly comic with some moments which are both shocking and hilarious. The violence is heavily stylised and the film has a glossy sheen to it and some well chosen music.

The entire cast are excellent in their respective roles and the characters are well defined and memorable. This film is always gonna take flack from more conservative viewers for its depiction of violence, especially since one of the main character is an 11 year old girl.

Kick-Ass is one of the funniest and most action packed films of the year so far. It's entertaining from start to finish and its quirky plot is sure to make it a classic.
