Based on a true story, American Me follows the life of Mexican Mafia kingpin Santana. Santana has spent most of his life in the American penal system and runs his prison from the inside. Upon his release he has to adjust to life outside the prison and begins to question the man he has become.

American Me is a gritty gangster drama set mostly inside the prison system, although the film covers the same themes as many prison set gangster dramas, it's well presented and feels believable. The main cast are mostly good in their roles, although there are a few places where the acting could be better.

Overall, a decent prison drama, but very much like a number of other similar films.
