Underworld
Director: Len Wiseman Year: 2003 Language: English Country: America
The first thing I have to say about this film is that it is far from original, there are many elements which have been chored from other films and sources, the entire basis of the story (forbidden love between two fueding factions) comes directly from Romeo and Juliet and much of the clothing and fight scenes seem to be heavily influenced by the Matrix.

Having said that, this is still a good film. Set in a time when Vampires and Lycans (Werewolves) are fighting for supreme control, Selene (Kate Beckinsale, Pearl Harbour, Van Helsing) discovers that the Werewolves are searching for a human and goes against the head of the Vampires clan wishes and seeks down the human the Werewolves are after. Michael (the human) ends up saving her life and they fall in love, but he has been bitten by a werewolf and has 2 days till the next full moon.

Anyway, after this the plot starts to twist and nothing seems like it is at the start, I don't want to give too much away on this. The plot and the action scenes make for an entertaining albiet not life changing film.

2003 Films
Untold Scandal
Director: Je-yong Lee Year: 2003 Language: Korean (English Sub) Country: South Korea
Untold Scandal is a Korean film based on the French Novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liasons). Director Je-Yong Lee took the story and set in Korea during the Chosun Dynasty. Not being a keen fan of this kind of arty type movie, I was pleasantly surprised that Untold Scandal was actually quite good.

The story tells of two nobles, Lady Cho and her cousin Cho Won, they place a wager that Cho Won can't bed A young Catholic girl who has made a pledge of chastity. The film basically follows Cho Won as he plays with the girls affections to get what he wants, along with some other sideplots involving the two cousins and their games of seduction.

The actor that plays Cho Won is great, he wanders around with his meticulously trimmed beard and silly hat, trying to seduce young women. One of his greatest powers seems to be his ability to talk sadly when they reject his advances whilst turning to the camera and smirking in a smug manner.

The film is well shot and as the story seems to translate to pretty much any setting, it makes for an interesting watch. Not really knowing much about the plot before hand probably helped as this story has been made into a number of films already.

Overall, this isn't the kind of movie I normally watch, but I quite enjoyed it and recommend it to all you arty types out there.

Unleashed
Director: Louis Leterrier Year: 2005 Language: English Country: United Kingdom
Danny (Jet Li) has been raised from a child as an animal by organised crime boss Bart (Bob Hoskins). Kept in a cage in Bart's office with a collar on, Danny is released whenever a bad debtor does not pay up. Once the collar is off, he becomes an extreme fighting killing machine.

After being involved in a car crash Danny escapes from his life in a cage and is taken in by Sam, a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman), and his step-daughter Victoria. They show him compassion and introduce him to the normalities of society, leaving his past life behind him. That is until Bart turns up keen to recapture him and return him to his life as a slave.

With action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) handling the fight scenes, Unleashed has a good amount of decent action scenes as Danny fights numerous opponents. These brutal fight scenes are starkly juxtaposed with the soft compassion shown to him by Sam and Victoria. This contrast does well to show the two different lives Danny can lead ultimately having to choose between the past and the future.

Jet-Li is well cast, being able to deliver on the fight scenes, Hoskin's too is good as the crime boss and Freeman is as always excellent. Luc Besson's screenplay is well written and the plot is interesting and engaging.

Uzumaki
Director: Higuchinsky Year: 2000 Language: Japanese (English Sub) Country: 日本 (Japan)
Uzumaki is a bit of a strange one, based on a Japanese Manga it tells the story of Kirie, a schoolgirl, and her boyfriend Shuichi. There are strange goings on in their town which are all related to spirals, Shuichi's father becomes obsessed with the shape, ultimately leading to his death while other students at the school are acting strange.

Uzumaki's Manga roots are obvious in the translation to film with a number of characters which have an over the top cartoon feel, situations which require suspension of belief and a number of interesting camera movements and use of colour. The plot is a little crazy and at the end, little is explained about the reasons for the events. The film is a little eerie but not really scary unless you have a real fear of spirals.

Overall, an interesting and well directed movie even if it does lose it's way a little bit towards the end.

The Unwritten Law
Director: See-Yuen Ng Year: 1985 Language: Cantonese (English Sub) Country: Hong-Kong
Andy Lau stars as Lau, a young lawyer, recently graduated from law school in London. On his return to Hong Kong, he finds employment with the father of a girl he met in England. Hearing about a case where a poor prostitute (Deannie Yip) has been accused of the murder of a rich business man's son he takes the case despite the murder's father being a prominent business man.

The Unwritten Law is an interesting legal drama which sees a young lawyer pittied against corruption an interesting twist (albiet one explained on the box) adds another dimension to the story.

The Untouchables
Director: Brian De Palma Year: 1987 Language: English Country: America
Chicago in 1930 at the height of prohibition saw a rise in underground crime as criminals fought to supply alcohol to those that wanted it. Al Capone (Robert Deniro) ran a lot of the underground crime and hence the city. The Untouchables tells of one Federal Agent, (Eliot Ness played by Kevin Coster) who yearns to bring Capone down.

He assembles a small team including himself, a cop with years of experience on the beat (Sean Connery), a rookie straight out of the academy and an accountant who believes their best bet to bust Capone is on tax evision grounds.

The Untouchables is a well made engaging drama with a fair amount of violence and action backed up by not only an excellent plot, but some good acting from Connery and Costner. The lead characters are interesting and you can get behind them, whereas Deniro is excellent in his role as the villian.

A classic piece of 80's cinema which is as watchable today as it was then.

United 93
Director: Paul Greengrass Year: 2006 Language: English Country: America
Of the 4 planes which were used in the terrorist attack of Sept. 11th, only one did not reach it's target. United 93 tells the story of the United Airlines flight 93 which crashed outside of Pennsylvania after a suspected struggle between passengers aware of what was happening and the hijackers.

The film is split roughly between two sub-plots, one following flight 93 from it's take off to it's tragic ending and the other following air traffic control operators across the United States as follow the unfolding of the horrific events.

With real life footage of the twin towers; the film provokes a strong emotional response. The acting is passable and the filming at times feels like more of a documentary than a drama. Overall, a good movie, although some will question whether this film should ever have been made.

Underworld Evolution
Director: Len Wiseman Year: 2006 Language: English Country: America
The sequel to 2003's Underworld starts exactly where the first film left off. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael are on the run from the recently awoken head of the Vampires, Marcus. Caught again between the factions of the Werewolves and the Vampires, Selene must stop Marcus from waking his brother William, the head of the Werewolves.

Underworld Evolution is dark and action packed, although like the first film isn't particularly original. The plot is good enough to advance the action which keeps the film exciting enough to keep the viewer's interest.

Ungu Violet
Director: Rako Prijanto Year: 2005 Language: Indonesian (English Sub) Country: Indonesia
Lando is a young photographer from Jakarta, we join him just as he has split up with his girlfriend. While taking some photos on his bus ride home, he spots a young woman, Kalin, who interests him; and after meeting her at the bus station where she works offers her the opportunity to model for the cover of the magazine he works for.

This catapults Kalin into the world of professional modelling and Kalin and Lando's professional relationship soon grows stronger when she is offered a job modelling for an advert and accepts with the proviso that Lando be her photographer. As the two work together more, they become more friendly on a personal level, but just as young love is blossoming, Lando calls it off unexpectedly.

Ungu Violet follows the pair as Lando struggles to come to terms with a secret in his personal life and Kalin continues to rise in the world of modelling unsure why Lando called things off. It's a modern love story which although cliched in places it reasonably entertaining and has a few plot surprises up its sleeve.

Uzak
Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan Year: 2002 Language: Turkish (English Sub) Country: Turkey
Set in a wintry Istanbull, Uzak tells the story of Mahmut, a photographer living in the city, when his cousin Yusaf, from the country, comes to stay while looking for a job after being made unemployed, he finds he has to share his life with someone else. Mahmut's insular existence means he's not used to this and this causes friction between the two men.

The bleak backdrop of the snow covered Istanbul sets the tone for the movie and coupled with the extremely slow pace, long lingering camera shots and sparse dialogue make for a movie where not all that much happens. The film is progressed entirely through the two main characters and their relationship up until its rather abrupt ending.

This is a movie which requires a special kind of viewer to watch it, unfortunately I'm not that kind of viewer and found it to be slow and slightly boring. While the camera working and acting can't be faulted, I felt the realism of the situation was such that there was nothing special to see.

Overall, a well made film, but the slow pace and little dialogue makes it a hard watch for those of us who aren't really into arthouse cinema.

Unforgiven
Director: Clint Eastwood Year: 1992 Language: English Country: America
Clint Eastwood plays retired cowboy and one time outlaw, William Munny. When Munny is told of a reward going to kill two men who left a prostitute disfigured in an attack, he comes out of retirement to team up with his old friend Ned (Morgan Freeman) and a young man going by the name of the Schofield Kid and begins hunting the two men.

Unforgiven plays out as the almost opposite to many cowboy films, Eastwood's character has none of the glamour or bravado of many cowboy heroes, he is old, sick and in the job solely for the money, his two buddies Ned and the Schofield Kid are little better, Ned has lost his nerve and the Schofield Kid is inexperienced and badly short sighted.

This opposition to the glamorous view of life as a gun-slinger provides for interesting characters as the trio make their way to their destination. The story is well told and there is a good amount of action, as well as the sub-plot of the sheriff of the town in which the events are happening.

Overall, a great film with a great performance from Eastwood and an interesting story being told.

Umberto D.
Director: Vittorio De Sica Year: 1952 Language: Italian (English Sub) Country: Italy
Set just after World War II, Umberto D. follows Umberto Ferrari, an Italian pensioner who struggles to scrape by on his pensions despite having paid for it in the form of his taxes for his entire working life. He is threatened with eviction by his landlady if he doesn't come up with the cash for his rent and his only real friend is his dog Flike.

Umberto D. is a bleak, tragic movie showing society's disregard for the old, the main cast is made up of non-professional actors and the film is filmed in real settings around Rome. Carlo Battisti's performance as Umberto Ferrari is heart wrenching and very well acted, the neo-realism adds to the emotional impact, it's all to easy to see that the situation Umberto finds himself in is one that many Italian pensioner's would have been in after the war.

The film is well made and well paced, driven entirely by the character of Umberto Ferrari. To me, the film felt similar to Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru which was released in the same year, both tell the stories of the loneliness and tradgedy of old age, although Ikiru does have a less bleak outlook on the situation. More recently, The Death of Mr. Lazerescu has revisited similar ground again, using realism to convey the plight of an elderly gentleman struggling to survive.

Overall, Umberto D. is well made, powerfully acted, emotionally charged and still relevant over 50 years on.

Up
Director: Bob Peterson Pete Docter Year: 2009 Language: English Country: America
Pixar return with Up but in a change the usual talking animal/car/monster lead character instead we have a grumpy old man. Carl Fredricksen is a pensioner who has recently lost his wife, when he is threatened with going into a retirement home, he attaches enough helium balloons to his house to provide sufficient lift to carry the house away. His goal is to take the house to South America and land next to the Paradise Falls waterfall that he and his wife had always dreamed about exploring.

Carl is joined on his adventure by a stow-away in the guise of 8-year old Russell. Together the pair become embroiled in an adventure from which they both learn a lot.

Like Pixars previous outings, the CGI is top notch, the world of the film is well presented and beautifully detailed. The 3D version is good, but I didn't feel it gained much from being in 3D (Although I'm a bit of a 3D cynic anyway). The plot is pretty straightforward and there are no real surprises. The humour in the film is mainly visual, with a lot of slapstick and some hilarious moments.

Overall, a well made, funny film which should go down well with Pixar fans. Those not won over by the cutesy visuals and soppy storylines will probably not enjoy the film anymore than any other Pixar animations.

The Usual Suspects
Director: Bryan Singer Year: 1995 Language: English Country: America
The Usual Supects is another classic which should need little introduction, it's one of these movies where the plot twist has become part of popular culture and almost everyone knows it. 5 criminals are called in by the police for a line up when a truck full of missing gun parts goes missing in New York. The 5 all protest their innocence, but while they are being held on suspicion of the robbery, they hatch a plan to pull a job for real.

The film flicks between the 5 men and their plan and the aftermath where Verbal (Kevin Spacey) is telling the police what happened when a mysterious and violent gangster by the name of Keyser Soze became involved in the 5 men's plot.

The Usual Suspects is full of memorable scenes and performances and is still highly enjoyable, even if you know the big secret. The cast is top notch with many big name actors either leading or in smaller supporting roles and the direction is excellent.

Overall, a cinema classic which is highly watchable.
